Spring: Spring nature trails Munich area

Spring is a season of rebirth in Bavaria. As the snow melts and temperatures rise, the landscape transforms into a colorful masterpiece.

Altmühltal Nature Park

Altmühltal Nature Park offers a variety of trails suitable for hikers of all levels. In spring, the meadows come alive with wildflowers, creating a picturesque setting for your hike. Keep an eye out for the park's enchanting limestone formations.

As part of my tips for hiking with children in Munich I would say that I find personally Altmühltal Nature Park to be a good family picnic spots in Bavarian nature.

During your visit, if you have kids with you, be sure to really explore the park, there are areas where kids can learn interactively and engage in educational activities that make the park both fun and informative. There's a lot of interesting thing there that can fill the walk with information. My kids can learn just by me commenting on the limestone formations and other elements we find around there such as fossils. Great to make kids curious about geology and easy to keep them engaged as kids love jurassic times. Also, in the spring this park is a family picnic hotspot.

The Altmühltal Nature Park is also great for biking, with one of the most popular bike trails in Germany.

Frühlingsweg in Berchtesgaden

For an easy-going spring hike, the Frühlingsweg (Spring Trail) in Berchtesgaden is a perfect choice. It's a leisurely walk through forests and fields with stunning views of the surrounding mountains. This trail is especially charming when spring arrives and the trail becomes a visual feast for your senses as the cherry trees are in bloom.

Summer: Summer family hiking Munich

Summer is a hiker's delight in Bavaria. With longer days and warm weather, you can embark on more ambitious adventures. I recommend any trail you can find in this season but here are two summer trails to keep your spirits high:

Tegelberg Mountain

Enjoy breathtaking views from Tegelberg Mountain, located near Neuschwanstein Castle. The sunny summer weather allows you to hike along this alpine trail with ease. I recommend taking the cable car up and hike down, or vice versa, depending on your preference.

The Neuschwanstein Castle is beautiful and worth visiting. According to everyone here, this is the castle that inspired Walt Disney to create the Disney logo we see in the opening of every Disney movie.

Isar River Trail

The Isar River Trail offers a refreshing hiking experience along the banks of the Isar River. It's perfect for a family outing or a leisurely stroll.

Apart from hiking and family walks with their dogs, the Isar River Trail is also a great option for cyclists. The trail provides for both leisurely biking and more challenging rides through the varied landscapes. This one is very a practical option because, one, you won't have to drive as much as in hikes in Mountains, and two, you can start it at many sections of the river.

If you're into nude sunbathing you might like to know that clothing-optional sunbathing is not uncommon.

Fall: Autumn family trekking near Munich

As the season sweeps through Bavaria, the forests erupt in a symphony of Autumn season color palette colors. The fall foliage is a sight to behold, and these two trails will lead you to the most enchanting displays:

Oktoberfest Hiking Trail

This one I've never done myself but it is an interesting option that a tourist guide told me he often recommends to tourists. Combine two Bavarian classics: hiking and Oktoberfest. This short walk, starting from the famous beer festival grounds in Munich, winds through the famous English Garden.

Bodenmais' Indian Summer Trail

Experience the magic of an Indian summer in the Bavarian Forest. Bodenmais offers a fantastic trail through forests that turn into a sea of red and gold during fall. Gorgeous hike.

Winter: Winter walks with kids Bavaria

Winter in Bavaria is synonymous with snow-covered trails, cozy mountain huts, and the irresistible aroma of mulled wine. Here are two trails that will make your winter wonderland dreams come true:

Berchtesgadener Land Snowshoe Trails

Embrace the beauty of a Bavarian winter with snowshoeing. Berchtesgadener Land offers various snowshoe trails that cater to all skill levels.

For those interested in history, on these trails one can stumble upon remnants of World War II. This area was once home to the "Obersalzberg," a key location for the Nazi regime, and you can discover bunkers, tunnels, and ruins that offer a glimpse into this historical period.

Zugspitze Winter Hike

For a magical winter hike, head to the Zugspitze. This trail is perfect for those who want to experience Bavaria's highest peak in a snow-covered wonderland. Zugspitze is in fact a place worth visiting every season of the year.

Some extra suggestions, specially for hikers with kids, are to look up for family hikes in Garmisch-Partenkirchen (here is a suggestion) and hiking routes in Chiemgau for families. And if your kiddos like some nature in its core, wildlife spotting for kids near Munich is a must.

It is also worth mentioning that there are many trails for hiking near Munich with baby strollers, so nothing can stop you from exploring around.
