The south of Germany is famous for its Bavarian Alps and stunning lakes. Yet, beyond that, Bavaria holds hidden hiking treasures waiting to enchant you. In this post I'm gonna share 5 of my favourite gem hiking spots that will captivate your senses. It's worth noting that all of these hikes are particularly engaging for children as well.
You can find easy Bavarian forest walks for toddlers in my list, as well as hiking near Munich with baby strollers. Not only Munich family hiking options but really hikes for anyone.
Ammer Gorge (Ammerdurchbruch)
Ammer Gorge is a lovely, delightful hike along the Ammer River's path. As you go through forests and rocky outcrops it can be very fun for children. I know my kids love to walk on rocks and play in the water. It's a 10 km (6.2 miles) walk and you find charming bridges and historic mills along the way, making it such a beautiful option. Also a great place for a picnic.
The Romantic Road Hike (Romantische Straße)
The Romantic Road, famous for its gorgeous route, offers delightful hiking experiences, perfect for a date. You can start at different points and anyone can enjoy this walk as it's of a very easy level.
It can also be nice for kids if you choose to walk through the village, as you will find yourself in a magic fairytale town. I myself love the very old charming medieval architecture that Germany has to show.
Mühlkoppe Trail
One of the great family hikes in Garmisch-Partenkirchen is the Mühlkoppe Trail. It takes you through forests, lakes and open meadows. Your get a bit of everything and that's why I think that's a great walk for the whole family and to take your dog along.
Märchenwald (Fairytale Forest) Trail
If you jest googled best family hikes near Munich under 5 km, the Märchenwald Trail, near Tegernsee, is your answer. Easy and short, this awesome trail will transport your into a fairytale world with hidden sculptures and wooden carvings. So needless to say, it's a very interesting hike to do with your kids, specially if you're trying to get them to start enjoying walks and hikes. People of any age would enjoy this walk though. It's perfect for days when you're not looking to challenge yourself and also don't feel like driving far for a nice hike.
You need to check it out, however if you're thinking about taking your kids alone, I would actually suggest you first take another trail, also in Märchenwald, that I believe might end up being a lot more joyful for children as it even has a playground.
