Rediscovering the Great Outdoors in the Heart of Munich
Munich's green spaces provide an incredible escape from the city's hustle and bustle. But what makes these nature reserves even more special are the playgrounds thoughtfully integrated within them. It's the perfect recipe for an unforgettable day out with the family.
Hirschgarten
One of the largest beer gardens in Munich, beyond the beer and pretzels, it's also home to a vast, beautifully landscaped park. It offers not only playgrounds where kids can climb, swing, and slide but also a vast green area and even a place to spot a few deer in the nearby enclosure.
English Garden (Englischer Garten)
The English Garden is Munich's most famous park, offering a playground near the Chinesischer Turm (Chinese Tower). This iconic park is a favorite among locals and visitors alike. With playgrounds and green areas, it's also perfect for picnics.
Educational Trails for Children in Bavaria
Now some of my favourite options. I find those places to be a great fun way to create educational experiences. Your kids can learn about local plants and animals, making your outing both fun and enlightening. Some of these places aren't as central as Hirschgarten and English Garden but it's worth it the drive as you will be a lot more immersed in nature.
Forstenrieder Park
Forstenrieder Park stands out as a sanctuary for Munich family hiking. Its educational trails are perfect for children to discover the magic of the forest. Keep an eye out for the "Waldwichtel" (Forest Gnomes) - small wooden figures placed along the trail. They lead the way and provide valuable insights into the surrounding nature. You will also find exercises suggestions along the trail, that are mostly for grownups but that kids also love to do too.
Although there are other places like this, I've suggested only the Forstenrieder Park for being the only one I'm actually very familiar with. In fact I used to take my kids there all the time. Great for toddlers, but also a nice place for older kids and teenagers as you can often find mountain bike jump trails hidden in the forest. I can always go for a place like this, while the English Garden I kind of have to be in the mood for, as it's a whole difference experience.
Munich Family Hiking Tours
Munich's nature reserves are full of beautiful trails for all levels of hikers, including families with children. These trails lead you through quiet woodlands, alongside lakes, and offer stunning views of the Bavarian landscape. They're also not very central but if you want beauty and piece, these are places to go to.
Eisweiherweg Trail
One such trail, the Eisweiherweg, winds through the tranquil surroundings of the Perlacher Forst. It's a short, family-friendly hike leading to a charming pond. The adjacent playground is perfect for a well-deserved break, allowing the little ones to play while you soak in the natural beauty. In the first two years of my kids journey as hikers I would often use those playgrounds as motivation to keep them moving all the way until the end of the hike. They love a hike or a walk in nature with a little playground at the end, just as much most of us love a hike with a biergarten or restaurant at the end.
Eibsee Lake
For a more challenging adventure, head to the Eibsee Lake, nestled at the foot of the Zugspitze, Germany's highest peak. While it may sound ambitious, there's a path suitable for families, with breathtaking vistas. Your hike will culminate with some relaxation at the lake's sandy shores and an enjoyable playground for the kids.
I like this hike in all four seasons. Every season it's a different landscape and the kids can either have fun breaking the thin ice or finding a bunch of tadpoles at the edge of the lake.
In Conclusion
Munich's nature reserves with playgrounds offer a unique combination of outdoor enjoyment, educational discovery, and delightful hikes. These hidden gems transform your family outing into an adventure that includes both the young and the young. Whether you're visiting Munich or are a local seeking new experiences, these nature reserves are waiting to be explored. Don't forget to pack a picnic, bring your hiking boots, and set off on a Munich family hiking tour you'll cherish for years to come. Let us know how it went. Cheers!
