For those experienced hikers who love breathtaking views, here is an option that are often overlooked. And if you're a beginner or intermediate hiker looking to explore this region, you're in for a treat. Here are the top 3 must-hike trails in Bavaria to help you plan your next adventure. From hard to easy, one for each level.
Watzmann-Hocheck Trail
Starting with the challenging one, the Watzmann-Hocheck Trail, in the Berchtesgaden National Park is for skilled hikers. You don't only need to be fairly fit, it will also require climbing equipment.
Enjoy the breathtaking views of the Watzmann massif and take a break at the mountain hut Watzmannhaus. And let me know how your hike went.
Whether you're a family, a couple seeking a romantic escape, or a group of outdoor enthusiasts, the next two following options have something for everyone:
King's Lake (Königssee)
With moderate difficulty, Königssee is a beautiful hike. What makes this lake so beautiful is the fact that it's a glacial lake and that it's surrounded by the Bavarian Alps. You can hike along the lake's shore in different seasons and every time the landscape will have a different beauty. So visiting the place several times a year will still feel like the first time. However if after enjoying the crystal-clear waters and mountain backdrop all around you in four different versions you still want something different, take a boat ride to St. Bartholomew's Church. You will experience the lake in a different way.
Something that makes Königssee special for families and couples is its accessibility. The trails around the lake are stroller and wheelchair-friendly, allowing everyone to enjoy the breathtaking scenery. The area is great for mountain biking, picnics, photography and peaceful walks.
Partnach Gorge
If you're looking for family hikes in Garmisch-Partenkirchen this is a great one. Specially impressive during winter, it's a beautiful and yet very easy hike that anyone will love and can do. I personality have great memories there as it is where I had one of my first dates with my now wife. The trail takes you through a narrow canyon with walls that reach up to 25 meters (80 feet) high and the Partnach River adds a unique power to the experience.
Partnach Gorge is a natural wonder that excites adventure seekers like me. It's a place where nature enthusiasts can explore the narrow, rocky paths and tunnels through the gorge and be amazed.
Unfortunately the Partnach Gorge's trail isn't stroller or wheelchair accessible due to its rugged terrain and tunnels. But it is a haven for mountain bikers, offering thrilling routes that weave through the breathtaking landscapes.
Whether you're seeking a leisurely family outing, a romantic date, or an adrenaline-pumping adventure with friends, these spots have you covered, you won't be disappointed!
A Final Note
To make the most of your Bavarian hiking experience, remember to check the weather conditions and trail accessibility before setting out. Also, respect the local environment and follow the Leave No Trace principles to preserve the natural beauty of this remarkable region.
