Creative Camping Activities for Family Fun and Togetherness

Updated: Dec 18, 2023

This will pull everyone away from their screens and deep into the wonders of nature, the joy of the moment, and the warmth of family connections. These aren't just fillers but real memory-makers. You won't even miss your phone – promise!

Happy family out in nature making marshmallows by the fire

Camping is an incredible way to bond with your family, especially when you're aiming to disconnect from the constant buzz of phones and tablets. Sure, steering clear of technology can be a challenge with kids around, but that's precisely where the fun begins! To tackle those inevitable moments of boredom and to fully immerse in the beauty of nature, I've put together a list of my favorite family-friendly camping activities. These are guaranteed to keep everyone engaged, present in the moment, and connected as a family.

While the main vibe of this list is all about embracing the fun in a screen-free world, I've sprinkled in a few cool activities that make use of phone apps too. We're mixing the best of both worlds.

A family next to their camper, stargazing with a telescope

How do I entertain my kids camping? How do I make camping not boring? What are some camping activities? Well, here is how:

Stargazing

Now, there's an activity that's a surefire hit with the kids, but the trick is to keep it engaging. Picture this: a clear night sky, a blanket spread out on the ground, and all of us lying back, our eyes wide with wonder. We're not just looking at stars; we're on a cosmic journey.

Waiting for shooting stars becomes a game of patience and excitement. Every streak of light across the sky brings a chorus of 'oohs' and 'aahs.' But that's not all. To spice things up, I break out the tablet and open a stargazing app. Even if you don't have an actual telescope you can transform the night sky into a map of endless possibilities. We're exploring constellations, pinpointing planets, and learning about the universe in the most interactive way. It's like having a personal planetarium at our fingertips!

The best part? We're not just staring up at the stars; we're connecting with each other and the universe. It's an opportunity to share stories about the stars, spark curiosity, and maybe even inspire a future astronomer or two. So next time you're out camping, remember to look up. The night sky is a vast, beautiful canvas, just waiting for you and your family to explore.

Treasure Hunt

A Camping Adventure with a Twist!

Treasure hunts – a classic that never gets old. When it comes to setting these up, I usually go all out for events like kids' birthdays. But camping's a different story. Out in the woods there are no moments to prepare a treasure hunt, so I whip up a more low-key version.

Imagine this: The kids are on a mission – maybe gathering stones to circle our campfire. Sounds simple, but to them, it's a fun quest! And when I've got a moment to spare beforehand, I'll bury something tiny for them to discover. It's like hitting a mini jackpot! Last time, it was a pocket-sized book. After the hunt, we all huddled together while I read it out loud under the stars. Magical!

The beauty of a treasure hunt while camping is in its simplicity. Give the kids a mission, inject a bit of fun into it, and watch them light up with excitement. It’s not just about the 'treasure'; it’s about turning a simple task into an adventure.

Storytelling Around the Fire

Ah, storytelling around a bonfire – it's a timeless tradition, isn't it? There's something about the crackling fire and the hushed anticipation that makes it the perfect setting for a good yarn. I'm usually the designated storyteller in our group, spinning tales that captivate and enchant. But, it's not all about me! I often toss the storytelling baton to the kids, asking if they have any tales to share. You should see their faces light up with excitement – they absolutely love it!

It could be any story really, some kids might wanna horro stories, some might enjoy farytales. My children personaly like stories from my childrood.

Now, a little pro tip from a seasoned storyteller: To make sure I won't run out of stories I always do a bit of homework before our trip. Scouring for stories that'll keep everyone hooked is part of my pre-camping ritual. And let me tell you, a well-prepared story can work wonders, especially with some sound effects thrown in.

And hey, if you do run out of stories, no stress! Sometimes the best stories are the ones that come spontaneously, right from the heart.

Another cool option is to get into some reading. Sometimes, instead of just telling stories, we like to snuggle up and read two or three books to the kids.

You know, a good old campfire is such a hit with kids that sometimes we do it even when we're not camping. We just gather 'round the fire, bring along some marshmallows or quick-cook bread dough, and the rest is pure fun!

Hand Shadows

This simple yet fascinating activity can be played with just a flashlight or even the warm glow of a bonfire. The idea is to create animal shadows with your hands, while the rest of the family guesses which animal it is. For a creative twist, why not put together a short shadow play? The sky's the limit when it comes to creativity here. My kids may not play this for hours on end, but it's definitely an activity they look forward to. Plus, it's a great incentive for them to help set up the fire, turning it into a family affair. It's moments like these – the whole family huddled together, guessing and laughing under the stars – that truly make camping trips unforgettable.

Games

When it comes to camping, games are the unsung heroes, the secret sauce of family fun. Honestly, it can be any game – the sky's the limit! In our family, we're big fans of classics like UNO or the ever-exciting HALLI GALLI. But truly, anything goes. It's all about having a blast together.

Ever thought of a lively round of hide and seek among the trees? It's a whole different level of excitement! And then, as the day winds down and we settle under the starry sky, that's when the calmer games come out.

What I love most about including games in our camping adventures is the way it brings everyone together. Whether it's a wild game of tag or a strategic battle of cards, these moments are the ones that we remember and talk about long after the trip is over. So, pack your favorite games, and get ready for some unforgettable family fun!

Singing

Singing is another way to create some awesome memories. I usually like to save the singing sessions for those cozy evenings by the campfire, but you can do it whenever it feels right for your camping adventure. And if someone in your family can play an instrument, that's even more fantastic!

So, these were my suggestions for some awesome family camping activities. What do you think? I'd love to hear how they worked out for you. And if you've got any cool ideas I didn't mention, please share them! My kids would be thrilled, and so would all the other readers.

Just a quick heads up, these activities aren't just to keep the kids occupied while you do your thing. Most of them are all about spending quality time together, which makes the memories even sweeter. You can have a true blast together!

Sometimes, we tend to think we have to keep our kids entertained all the time, but you know what? A little boredom can actually be a good thing. It helps them learn how to deal with it and get creative. Often, if you just let them be bored for a little while, they'll end up finding something fun to do all on their own. And when you're outdoors, like when camping, it's even easier for them to explore and have adventures. So, no need to stress about filling every single moment with activities. Embrace those 'nothing to do' moments, and you might be surprised at the creativity that unfolds!

If you haven't already, make sure to take a look at my list of apps that can add some excitement to your camping adventure. These suggestions come in handy when the kids start getting a little bored.

People also ask:

What's the best age for kids to camp?

Around 4 to 7 years old is a sweet spot for kids to start camping. At this age, they're curious little explorers but still young enough to marvel at the wonders of the outdoors. They're usually more adaptable to new sleeping environments by this age, which makes camping less of a hassle and more of a fun family adventure. Also, that will introduce a great hobby to their childrood memories.

Is camping good for ADHD? Absolutely. Being outdoors, surrounded by nature, can really calm the mind and reduce stress. Plus, there's so much to do that keeps you active and engaged - hiking, exploring, even setting up the tent. It's a great break from the usual routine and can be super refreshing for the brain.

Is backyard camping fun?

Yeah, backyard camping can be a blast! It's like a mini outdoor adventure without straying too far from home.

When I do it, I tell the kids that we're practicing for when we go camping for real, and that usually makes them more cooperative. At some point, though, you do have to go camping for real.

What are some fun backyard camping activities for kids? How can I make my 4 year old camping fun?

I would say that most (if not all) of the suggestions I mention in this post can be done in a backyard and will keep a 4 year old entertained.
