TrailTools

Welcome to our handpicked collection of engaging apps, thoughtfully chosen to enrich your outdoor adventures and hiking experiences. I like to often swap screen time for green time, but in today's digital age, why not harmonize technology with the natural world around us? These apps are not just tools; they're gateways to deepening our understanding and appreciation of nature. They can be especially useful for keeping children and those new to outdoor activities captivated, transforming a boring day in nature into an interactive and educational journey.

The reason why I've chosen apps is because they have the added benefit of being readily accessible and convenient. Unlike bulky gear or specialized devices, they reside right in your smartphone, offering a lightweight, cost-effective, and always-available solution to enhance your outdoor experience. Whether you're seeking to stay engaged in the present moment, learn more about your surroundings, or simply add a layer of fun to your nature excursions, these apps are here to bridge the gap between the digital world and the great outdoors, enriching your adventures and the connections with those around you. I myself have used those to learn new facts about the nature around. Those are not apps you will use much, but when the time comes it's nice to have them in hands.

I'm excited to share with you my list apps (available for download at your convenience).

I wanted to share that while I've listed my personal favorite apps here, there's a whole world of similar options out there. So, feel free to explore and find the ones that suit you.

All opinions expressed about these apps are solely my own and are not influenced by any form of advertisement or commercial purposes.

SkyView Lite

The first one is one of my favorites, SkyView Lite – it's this really cool app that'll totally get you hooked on stargazing and exploring the night sky. It's like having a guide to the stars in your pocket, showing you constellations, planets, moons, satellites, and all the cosmic stuff, all in real time and with information about everything you're looking at. So if your kids ask you something you don't know how to answer, just tap the screen and let the app help you. And that's not even the best part; it works offline, won't cost you a dime to download, and is available for both iPhone and Android users. Definitely a must-try.

This app is free and available for iPhone and Android

Picture Mushroom - Mushroom ID

Up next, I've got Picture Mushroom - Mushroom ID. It's a fantastic app for identifying mushrooms, and it's been a hit with my family during our nature outings. It turns our hikes into a fun game for the kids, as they eagerly scout around, searching for the next mushroom to identify. Ideally, I'd love to be a mushroom expert myself and pass that knowledge onto my kids, but since I'm still learning, this app has been a great tool. The kids absolutely adore it, and it adds an educational twist to our outdoor adventures.

I'd like to emphasize that I use the app purely for entertainment and educational purposes. I strongly advise against relying solely on this app for actual mushroom picking or handling. It's a great tool for learning and fun, but when it comes to foraging or touching wild mushrooms, if you're not 100% sure of what you're doing (which I assume you're not, otherwise you probably wouldn't need this app) it's always best to consult with a knowledgeable expert or use additional reliable resources. Safety first, especially in nature!

This app is free and available for iPhone and Android.

PlantSnap

PlantSnap works very similarly to Picture Mushroom - Mushroom ID, it lets you identify plants, flowers, and trees instantly with a photo. It's educational and adds an element of botanical exploration to your hikes. One time, the app identified a plant species that has existed since prehistoric times, now just a tenth of its original size. I remember how that discovery turned a hike from potentially boring for my kids into something exciting.

The app is available for iPhone and Android.

Geocaching

It turns your hike into a treasure hunt. Geocaching is a global game that involves finding hidden 'geocaches' using GPS coordinates. It adds an element of excitement and discovery to your hikes, making it especially fun for groups or family outings as it's literally a treasure hunt (kids love it).

The Geocaching app is free and available for iPhone and Android.

PeakVisor

This app enhances the scenic enjoyment of your hikes by using augmented reality to identify mountains and peaks in your view. Just point your phone's camera at the horizon, and it will label the names and heights of the mountains you see, enriching your understanding of the landscape. It can be nice for when you're at the peak, admiring the view and checking the names of the surrounding mountains, or for when you're on a walk and see a peak you'd like to visit, so you can check out its name.

The app is free and available for iPhone and Android.
